Affecting Everybody's Life

Nano-sunscreens and cosmetics, new toxicity risks, enhanced cancer treatment, biosensors, environmentally friendly batteries, cheaply desalinated sea water, invisible military weapons?

HOW WILL NANOTECHNOLOGY REALLY AFFECT OUR LIVES?

Good question! If you'd like to learn more, and if you live near Madison, Wisconsin, consider attending the next Nano Café, on Thursday, October 26th, at 6:00 pm.

The Nano Cafés are short talks about the promises and possible dangers of nanotechnology followed by an informal discussion over dessert and coffee.

Nanotechnology is an emerging field, which involves the understanding, manufacture, and manipulation of extremely small matter. The prefix 'nano' is derived from the Greek word 'nanos' meaning 'dwarf'.

Nanotechnologies enable scientists and industries to make new shapes, devices, and products from cosmetics to drugs and aircraft materials. Although still largely unknown by lay people, nanotechnology will soon affect everybody's life and is considered the next industrial revolution.

The Nano Cafés provide a casual atmosphere in which people who don't know a lot about nanotechnology can listen to experts, ask questions, and share concerns. UW-Madison experts explain their work, answer questions and address concerns from members of the public.

At the October 26th Nano Café, Dr. Maria Powell, a researcher in the Nanoscale Science & Engineering Center from the University of Wisconsin Madison, will give a short talk about what nanotechnology is and what kinds of nanotechnology consumer products are currently on the market. She will also discuss some of the societal, environmental, and ethical controversies related to the development of these products.

The event is sponsored by members of the Citizens' Coalition on Nanotechnology and the Northside News, in cooperation with faculty in the UW-Madison Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center.

  • Free admission
  • No science background required
  • Food and beverages provided

CRN is not involved in this event, but we're happy to promote opportunities for citizens everywhere to learn more about emerging technologies. If you have an event you'd like us to highlight, please contact us.
