Mechanical Engineering & CRN
Ever since we posted an article about "Mechanical Engineering and Nanotechnology," large numbers of mechanical engineers and students have been asking us for information about nanotechnology and how it affects their field.
Please stop. Or, at least read this first:
Almost all of the research and development occurring today in nanotechnology -- whether related to mechanical engineering, chemistry, pharmaceuticals, materials science, or other areas -- is not directly connected to CRN's main focus. Therefore, we can't comment authoritatively on most of that work.
Our area of specialty is molecular manufacturing -- mechanical control of programmable chemistry to build exponential manufacturing systems and high-performance products -- and the policy issues raised by that transformative near-future capability.
If you are looking for detailed technical information about this type of advanced nanotechnology, the best place to start is with Eric Drexler's seminal work, Nanosystems: Molecular Machinery, Manufacturing, and Computation. For a brief overview of what it contains, see our "5-Minute" summary.
To learn about the anticipated societal impacts and possible responses, a good beginning point is our paper "Bridges to Safety, and Bridges to Progress". You'll find many other interesting papers on our main website, as well as a collection of science essays written by Chris Phoenix. We've also compiled a list of proposed studies to cover the field. The studies have preliminary answers, which will give you a lot of information.
If you still can't find what you're looking for, then your interests may lie outside of our field. We still welcome questions, of course, but suggest that you do a little research before writing.
Thanks!

Dear Sir,
I have just completed my undergraduate program and received my B.Tech degree in Mechanical Engineering. I am interested in persuing a research career in the filed of Nanotechnology in Mechanical Engineering either first doing a MS followed by Ph.D or direct Ph.D if possible. Will you please advise me the possible Universities/Institutes where I can contact in USA for the same.
Thanks!

Sir!
I'm a final student in mechanical engineering . Could you please help me know what a mech engineer has to play in nanotechnology. What areas he/she should target to have a hang on this field.
1). heat flow on microchips
2). boiler /vessel design
or may be some specific applicatins
Please reply me
Govind.

Chris, Mike: You know, we keep seeing these messages. What can we interpret from them?
- The idea of MNT is catching on with young mechanical engineers, particularly (I am guessing, based on the names) in India.
- They represent an opportunity for CRN. Get these people organized somehow! Maybe some just want to apply nano-materials to engineering problems - but at least some must be interested in learning (and helping develop) design rules necessary to design nano-components.

Dear sir,
If the molecular manufacturing is building of large engineered products from molecular level using nano facotries, then what about the availability of the materials in the molecular form? Does the molecular manufacturing use a new class of materials than the conventional materials like steel, aluminium etc?

Rajesh, MM works best with elements that form strong covalent bonds, like carbon. So yes, it probably uses organic materials rather than metallic materials. This implies that mining will become less necessary.

Most of the questions on this thread are either extremely broad and vague, such that they could have been answered by a bit of online research, or extremely specialized in areas we have said we are not experts in.
Accordingly, we are closing comments on this thread.
